On a glorious sunny day a packed Cathedral greeted Bishop Mark and priests from all over the Diocese who all gathered to celebrate the Chrism Mass on Wednesday 17 April. People from all over the Diocese had made the journey to celebrate this beautiful occasion in which the Holy Oils to be used during the liturgical year are blessed by the Bishop.
You may wonder why Plymouth Diocese celebrates the Chrism Mass on the Wednesday of Holy Week: although the Chrism Mass is generally celebrated on Maundy Thursday, the vast size of our diocese means that those from the far reaches of Dorset and Cornwall would not be able to celebrate both the Chrism Mass and the Mass of the Lord's Supper together on the same day. To enable as many priests and parishioners to get to the Cathedral, it is celebrated instead on the Wednesday. This year the Cathedral was packed, with standing room only, with many people travelling by coach from the far reaches of our diocese. We thank everyone who was able to make the journey to celebrate this beautiful and solemn occasion with us.
