My over worked Treasurer, Belinda O'Hara, approached me some months ago and said we have to do something about our Parish weekly giving. No doubt many of you will have noticed that our weekly income has dropped dramatically over the last few years, by approximately £440 a week. You will see from the Parish Financial Statement that our ordinary yearly expenditure exceeded our ordinary yearly income by £20,879.
It is true that we have been extremely fortunate in obtaining very generous grants to date, however procuring these grants has cost the Parish £31,448. The minor re-ordering of the Cathedral, which has been welcomed by so many people, has cost the Parish £30,738 after gifts and donations have been taken into account. Our Diocesan levy has increased by £4,815. On top of all that expenditure, the Cathedral Parish has paid 50% of the cost of the much needed and essential repairs to stonework, roof repairs, refurbishment of windows and replacement of the entire guttering system to the Cathedral/Bishops House, at a cost of £161,680 (no grants were available for this work). You will understand that this much needed expenditure, coupled with the cost of procuring the grants, has virtually wiped out our reserves.
The good news is that, when phases two and three are completed later this year, which we confidently expect to come in on the grant price, we can rightly be proud that our Cathedral and Cathedral/Bishop's House will be in good shape for many years to come.
What do we do now? As I have suggested on previous occasions, if we all make an effort, we can do it. Over the last three years many of our generous weekly givers have died, or moved away, and unfortunately we have not been good at highlighting the need for new people to be part of our weekly giving system.
Please read the information provided by our treasurer, Belinda O'Hara, on how to be part of the weekly envelope system, and if you do pay tax please consider signing the gift aid form which will add a further 25% to your contribution.
Thank you for your immense generosity and your ever loyal support to the clergy and to the Parish.
Giving to the Parish
Weekly Envelope System Simply pick up a blue application form from the Cathedral narthex and return it to our Gift Aid Organiser, Margaret, via the Parish Office.
Standing Order Email the Parish Office at firstname.lastname@example.org or telephone us on 01752 662537 and ask for a Standing Order form which will give you the bank details to set up a Standing Order. You can either use these details to set up a Standing Order via online banking, or you can take the details into a branch of your bank and they will set up a standing order for you. Please do let us know if you set up a standing order to the parish.
Gift Aid If you are a tax payer you can gift aid any donations you make to the parish. All you need to do is ask our Gift Aid organiser for a Gift Aid declaration which will enable us to claim 25% of your donations back from HMRC (that's 25 pence for every £1 you donate).
