Re: Invitation to the Memorial Mass for the Right Reverend Christopher Budd

The Canons of the Chapter of the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Boniface, Plymouth invite you to the
Memorial Mass for Bishop Christopher Budd. This Mass will be an opportunity for us as a Diocese to
celebrate his life and his considerable contribution to the Plymouth Diocese during his time as Bishop of
our Diocese from 1986 until 2014, as well as a chance to offer up prayers for the repose of his soul.

This Memorial Mass will take place at 12 noon on Tuesday 23rd May at Plymouth Cathedral and will be
followed by a barbecue in the grounds of the Cathedral.

Please could those priests and deacons who wish to attend this Mass inform Emma, the Diocesan
Administrator’s P.A. Her email address is: [email protected] If parish priests are aware of
numbers coming from their parish, please could you also let Emma know.

Every Blessing,

Canon Peter Morgan

Secretary to the Cathedral Chapter

It is with great sadness we announce the death of our dear Bishop Christopher Budd, the retired bishop for our diocese.
Bishop Christopher passed away in the early hours of today at his place in Lyme Regis, aged 85.

Canon Paul Cummins, our Diocesan Administrator said:
“Bishop Christopher was a faithful servant of the Lord and of the Church. He was an inspiration and a friend”

On his Silver Jubilee as Bishop of the Diocese of Plymouth in 2011, reflecting on his ministry, he said: “The celebration of a bishop’s ministry should not principally focus on the person of the bishop. The proper focus is God’s gift of episcopacy to the diocese; the particular bishop is always secondary to that.” There are [some] thoughts I would like to share on this occasion: the Lord is calling our diocesan Church to be faithful to Him at a time of great social and cultural change.

“I know that you will join me in praying for Bishop Christopher’s eternal joy with the risen Christ as his good and faithful servant – and in offering his family and friends our heartfelt condolences and our prayers over the coming days.

A Book of Condolence is available in the Cathedral

Further details about Bishop Christopher’s funeral will be published once arrangements have been made.

My sincerest sympathy to all in the Diocese of Plymouth on the death of Bishop Christopher Budd. My prayers for you all and for his family and friends, to whom he was so close and for whom he was so grateful. May Bishop Christopher now receive the reward of his labours, and hear those comforting words of the Lord, whom he served so well, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Master.”

Tributes have been paid to the former Catholic Bishop of Plymouth, Christopher Budd, who has died at the age of 85. Bishop Christopher passed away in the early hours of Saturday at his home in Lyme Regis, Dorset. He held the title of Emeritus Bishop Of Plymouth, following his retirement in 2013 after 27 years as the city’s Catholic Bishop.
Canon Mark O’Keefe, Dean of the Cathedral Church of St Mary and St Boniface, said: “It is with great sadness that we have heard the news that our Emeritus Bishop Christopher has died.
“Bishop Budd was ordained to the priesthood in July 1962 and ordained bishop in Plymouth Cathedral on January 15, 1986. He was a member of the Bishops’ Conference Department for Social Justice.”
Canon Paul Cummins, Plymouth Diocesan administrator, said: “Bishop Christopher was a faithful servant of the Lord and of the Church. He was an inspiration and a friend.
“I know that you will join me in praying for Bishop Christopher’s eternal joy with the risen Christ as his good and faithful servant – and in offering his family and friends our heartfelt condolences and our prayers over the coming days.”
Bishop Budd came to Plymouth Diocese as Bishop in January 1986, and celebrated his 25th anniversary in 2011 before retiring in November 2013.
The Plymouth Diocese covers the counties of Devon, Cornwall, and Dorset, and the Isles of Scilly.
Reflecting on his ministry on his 25th anniversary, Bishop Budd said: “The celebration of a bishop’s ministry should not principally focus on the person of the bishop. The proper focus is God’s gift of episcopacy to the diocese; the particular bishop is always secondary to that.”
Archbishop Mark O’Toole, Bishop Budd’s successor in Plymouth (and now Archbishop of Cardiff), also paid tribute to Bishop Budd.
He said: “My sincerest sympathy to all in the Diocese of Plymouth on the death of Bishop Christopher Budd. My prayers for you all and for his family and friends, to whom he was so close and for whom he was so grateful.
“May Bishop Christopher now receive the reward of his labours, and hear those comforting words of the Lord, whom he served so well. Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Master.”
