Cathedral Music

Cathedral Music News – June 2022

Thank you to the seventy or so people who came to the Inaugural Concert of the new organ on May 13th . David Davies, organist of Buckfast Abbey thrilled us with his light and entertaining repertoire, so beautifully played. Thank you David !

Choir Seating
The choir has returned to the Sacred Heart Chapel, in the north transept. The new organ console is close by. All comments made to me have been very supportive of the move. It is very nice for the choir to have somewhere to call “home” again. They also have some very useful music stands, which are most appreciated.

New Choir Cassocks and Cottas:
Now that that the organ is installed and the choir re-sited, the next stage of renewal is to look at getting new choir cassocks and cottas. The current roman purple choir gowns have been in use for 25+ years and have seen better days. Some gratefully received donations were made towards buying something new a while back, and we have decided to get them from J & M Sewing Services in Newcastle. They will be more traditional than the current gowns – black cassocks and white cottas. They will be made to measure and should look very dignified and smart. We still need to raise some money before the order can go in - any donations, clearly marked for the Choir Robe fund, would be very gratefully received.
Archbishop-elect Mark O’Toole
We send our sincerest best wishes and congratulations to Archbishop-elect Mark O’Toole, upon his appointment as Archbishop of Cardiff and Bishop of Menevia (in persona episcopi). +Mark has always been most supportive of the music here at Plymouth and we thank him for his years as our Diocesan Bishop. We will miss him greatly, but assure him of our continued prayers for his new ministry in Wales.
The Cathedral Choir:
Is a four-part, adult voluntary choir that normally sings at the Cathedral’s 10am Solemn Mass on Sundays and at the Sung Mass or other sung liturgies on major holy days. The weekly choir rehearsal is at 9am on a Sunday in the Cathedral, immediately before the 10am Mass. There are only two prerequisites : that you can sing (in tune) and that you can commit the time needed to attend regularly. At this time we are particularly short of Tenors and would welcome an additional Tenor or two.

Anyone interested in joining the choir is encouraged to speak to me or any choir member after mass on Sunday mornings. Alternatively, you can telephone me or email me. Details of how to do that are below.

Robert Osmond Organist & Director of Music Tel: 07970-566466 Email: robert.osmond@hotmail.com or Plymouth.Cathedral.Music@hotmail.com
The Cathedral’s Organist and Director of Music is Robert Osmond who was appointed to the Cathedral for a second time in 2020, having held the post for some years during the 1990s.

He had the pleasure of working with the Cathedral Dean, Canon Mark O’Keeffe, for several years when Canon Mark was the Parish Priest of Paignton.

Robert has been involved in church music since the age of 7, firstly as a chorister, then as an Assistant Organist at 15 and Organist / Director of Music from the age of 21. He has served in parishes’ locally in Devon and in both Kilburn and Willesden Green in London.

Raised in the Anglo - Catholic tradition within the Church of England, Robert was received into full communion with the Holy See in early 1993, by the late Fr. Tony Bennett at Sacred Heart, Paignton and was subsequently Director of Music there before being appointed to the Cathedral a couple of years later.
